St. George’s Dragon Quest
I've designed and illustrated four new dragon characters, and created a new history trail, drawing quest and papercraft activity for National Trust and Norfolk Museums St. George's Guildhall in King's Lynn.
The Characters
For the style, we took inspiration from a woodcut print of Robert Armin, Shakespeare’s comedian who was born in King’s Lynn. Historical dragons of King’s Lynn were incorporated into their design, including the dragon heads on their coat of arms. The colour palette was inspired by the Guildhall’s logo, but muted to improve accessibility and to represent the pigments available at the time the Guildhall was built.
The Trail
Each Guildhall Dragon represents a moment in the building’s history, and the booklet includes a summary for each.
The Guildhall is currently undergoing significant restoration and redevelopment, and so the trail and activity can be enjoyed in any space of the building, and at home.
The Quest
The booklet includes a drawing quest to design and draw a dragon, inspired by the history and architecture of the Guildhall. This dragon, and the Guildhall dragons, can then be used in the paper theatre to perform the history and stories learnt.
